2010 Campaign: Together With Toughees

With over 25 000 entries, the Together with Toughees competition was a great success! THANK YOU.
It has been a rewarding experience to see South Africans from all walks of life coming together with Toughees to try make a difference and overcome the challenges we face with educating our future generations.

We have received many terrific responses from parents, teachers and children across South Africa. Many making a special effort with their submissions. From the entries it is evident that South Africa faces many challenges with educating our future generations, but at the same time each entry represents an individual with hope for a better tomorrow.

Brookdale Primary was chosen not only because it needed an upgrade but because it was also actioning its own initiatives to improve the quality of the education it offers, plus taking an active involvement in improving the quality of life of its pupils.

David Lloyd, the Brand Manager of Toughees mentioned: This gift that we have bestowed is well-deserved and was awarded to this particular school because we recognized the inspiring leadership of the headmaster and the selfless dedication of the educators in providing children who come from the poor, crime-ridden areas, with the best possible education.

The school is situated right on the edge of Phoenix. Originally opened in 1993 the school was designed to cater for the children of Indian families living in the area. However, since 1994 there has been a massive influx of African people from the rural areas into the catchment area of the school.

The sprawling informal settlements of Amayoti and Bhambayi have been built up and continue to grow within sight of the school. All the buildings at the school are named after some of the informal areas i.e. Cuba and Angola etc.

Approximately 98% of the learners attending the school are black with only 2% Indian. Although now catering for the poorest of the poor the school is considered a privileged school because it charges school fees of R 250.00 per pupil per year of which only 3% can afford to pay. There are 1731 pupils at the school, of which 973 pupils are orphans, and 360 are from child headed families.
Brookdale Primary Schools Needs

There is a dire need for Grade R classrooms. Presently the Grade Rs have four classes, two classes are housed in rooms, while one class sits on the verandah and the fourth class, is located under a tree – weather permitting.

Toughees School Shoes embraced the belief of senior educators that Grade R is one of the most important stages in a childs education and provides a firm base for their future schooling.
The Prize
Thanks to the Together With Toughees initiative, two new classrooms will be built. When Dr. Soman was asked how he felt, he replied: I think there is a wonderful partnership being formed between ourselves and Toughees and I think that it is great, what they have set out to do – their help with the community and needy children. I look forward to the new Grade R classrooms and feel at ease that these young children will have a safe place to learn and build their futures, as their educational future starts here. Thank you so much, Toughees!
The Builders

The Toughees organisation has partnered with Project Build to manage the construction project. Project Build is a KZN based, non-profit organisation. They are an experienced company having built many school and community projects. They also involve the community in the construction – thus continuing with the Together With Toughees campaign ethos of involvement and support.

The Cherry on Top
Together with the Massmart Group, Toughees have secured for Brookdale a donation of several tunnels for growing vegetables. Located within the school grounds, they will be used to supplement the school feeding scheme. Massmart will also donate the services of a consultant, who will site and erect the tunnels as well as providing the first batch of seedlings and the expertise to grow them successfully.
